Book Review: Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering by Dr. Sarah J. Buckley, MD

I'm excited to share this book with you! I am pregnant with my 2nd child and heard about this book after searching high and low for VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) information that was based on statistics and was also objective.

Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering is your ultimate natural birth guide, written by a medical doctor who has home-birthed all four of her children!

She covers all emotional and spiritual aspects of birth, giving Mama the courage to say

it's my body, my baby, my choice

Which is also the title of one of her chapters (my favorite new quote!).

Dr. Buckley then moves on to common interventions that happen to a lot of pregnant and birthing mothers, such as induction, routine ultrasounds, GBS testing, antibiotic administration during labor, and Gestational Diabetes Testing. She thoroughly covers all risks, benefits, and side effects of each of these interventions, then helps the reader to use a method for analyzing different choices that will be presented to her. That way Mama can make an informed choice that is best for her and Baby.

Later in the book, she deftly explains the interactions of hormones during birth. She demonstrates how those hormones naturally make opiates for pain relief during labor if there are no medications taken to interfere with the process. She emphasizes a need for a undisturbed birth, where Mama is able to freely express herself without hearing background chatter or feeling pressured to progress.

Some chapters may be painful to read. Especially if you've had a previous intervention-filled birth or a C-section. I had that experience reading about C-Sections, as my son was born that way and it started to make me feel guilty. So, I skipped reading that section for the sake of keeping my stress level down. It's hard enough to release those memories and let the guilt go from the past, and I don't need reminding. But don't get me wrong, her information is really invaluable for a first-time mom who needs help wading through all of the mis-information out there + the pressure from family and friends.

Anyone who needs a really good statistic to justify their birth choice, whether it be a home birth, lotus birth, or any other out-of-the-box idea will be armed with some great tools from this book.

Dr. Buckley is extremely well-informed about the risks associated with "active management" of labor. She has done all of the leg-work and research for Mamas-to-be everywhere.

My absolutely favorite chapter is "Love, Attachment, and Your Baby's Brain". It's all about Baby's brain and how it responds so magically to all loving affection. It is truly amazing how Mamas and Babies have adapted to each other's needs and Mama is able to provide everything so easily and naturally.

Thanks to Dr. Buckley I have more courage and confidence to birth naturally and put away the past experiences with hospitals and interventions, looking forward to a beautiful, peaceful, calm birthing environment.

I was not asked to do this review and have never met Dr. Buckley. I simply wanted to share a great book with y'all!
